The 2025 London Marathon, held on April 27, set a new Guinness World Record for the largest number of finishers in a marathon, with 56,640 runners completing the 26.2-mile course. This achievement surpassed the previous record of 55,646 set by the New York City Marathon in November 2024.

The elite races featured exceptional performances. In the men's category, Kenya's Sabastian Sawe won on his marathon debut with a time of 2:02:27, outpacing a competitive field that included legends like Eliud Kipchoge. In the women's race, Ethiopia's Tigst Assefa set a new women's-only world record by finishing in 2:15:50, breaking the previous record of 2:16:16 held by Kenya’s Peres Jepchirchir.

In the wheelchair races, Swiss athletes continued their dominance. Marcel Hug secured his seventh London Marathon title in the men's division with a time of 1:25:25, while Catherine Debrunner claimed her third victory in the women's race, finishing in 1:34:18.

The event also saw a record number of applications, with 840,318 people entering the ballot for the 2025 race, making it the most applied-for marathon event globally. The London Marathon remains a significant occasion, not only for elite athletes but also for charity runners, raising over £1.3 billion for various causes since its inception.
